Zapata County Fair Trail Ride
About 100 cowboys and cowgirls of all ages travel to Bustamante from places like Eagle Pass, San Antonio, Laredo, Carrizo Springs, Piedras Negras and Saltillo, Mexico, to help kick off the 40th annual Zapata County Fair on Saturday, March 3, 2012.
Dressed in full trail-riding regalia —chaps, cowboy hats, boots and spurs — the participants mount their horses and rough the usually sunny weather for about 15 miles.
The trail ride begins at the Bustamante Arena and ends at the Zapata County Fair Pavilion.
Some riders travel with other members of their families on horseback, while others travel alongside their trail-riding groups.
All riders have one thing in common, they are all part of an age-old Southern tradition of trail riding passed on through the generations.
